Nearly every week around Victoria community events are held by people who love pets. Professional breeders, dog trainers, exhibitors, clubs and associations regularly gather to share information with the community. You don't have to be experienced to participate in these events: they are a great opportunity to talk to the experts in the field and to find out more about how to look after your pet.

To find out about pet care events or microchip days around the state, click on the link to the Event Calendar.

Ring the animal management or local laws section of your local council, and they should be able to tell you about dog obedience or pet socialisation classes held in your area, or any microchip days or pet events that may be planned.

Try ringing veterinary clinics in your area to see if they hold puppy or kitten socialisation classes.

Animal welfare shelters may also offer pet socialisations and/or dog obedience classes (try RSPCA ph 9224 2211, Lost Dog's Home ph 9329 6933, or look in the yellow pages under "Animal Welfare Organisations" for a shelter near you).

Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading "Dog Training" for a comprehensive list of organisations throughout the state which offer pet socialisation and dog obedience training classes.

Contact the Victorian Canine Association (ph 9788 2500, Locked Bag K9, Cranbourne, VIC, 3977) for details of dog obedience schools and pet socialisation classes in your area, as well as general information on choosing and caring for a pet.
